The EFCCE Student Competition Jury consists of senior advertising professionals, academics & professors representing a variety of communication and marketing disciplines from each country.
The 2008-2009 Jury also includes EU officials and representatives from the car industry.
Rudi Kobza, Chairman, Draftfcb Kobza and Lowe GGK, Austria, will chair the 2007-2008 Student Competition
He started his career in 1986 in one of the best agencies in Austria and became member of the Management Board in 1990.
In 1994, Rudi founded Kobza Communications, which became FCB Kobza a year later. Subsequently, he diversified the agency into sub-companies and specialised agencies: FCB Kobza (classic advertising), FCB Retail (retail marketing), FCBi (interactive and direct marketing) and FCB Events & PR (events and PR). Since 2005, Rudi is the Chairman of Lowe GGK.
Draftfcb Kobza and Lowe GGK have won many awards including Lions in Cannes, Clio, Eurobest, Epica, New York, IAA, Effies, Golden Drums...
In 2006 and 2007 Draftfcb Kobza became the No. 1 agency in the CCA (Creative Club Austria) and in the annual Austrian creative ranking and is also the only Austrian agency to feature in the Gunn Report. Both agencies serve as a centre of excellence and hub for clients and the agency network in Central and Eastern Europe.
Rudy sits on the Board of Austria’s International Advertising Association and has taken part in several national and international award juries.
MEMBERS OF THE JURY, ROUND ONE
Eva studied law at the University of Vienna and worked in different advertising agencies during her studies. In 1984, she started to work for the federal ministry of consumerism. In 1988, she followed her heart and changed to Dr. Puttner & BSB as Account Manager. She became Account Director for the largest retailers in Austria: BILLA AG and Mercedes-Benz.
Since 1996, she has been working for BBDO for international and national clients (VISA-Austria, Henkel, Generali,..) and became member of the Management Board. Generali Insurances & BBDO Austria won the first and only EURO EFFIE for Austria. Regarding EFFIE Awards, BBDO is the most successful international agency in Austria. In 2008 they won Platin, Gold and Bronze EFFIEs.
Since 2008 Eva is BBDO Austria’s Managing Director.
Jan graduated from the Prague University of Economics. His advertising career started in 1993 as a part time job during his studies.
He became the CEO of McCann in Prague in 2002 and won awards in several international and local creative competitions including the Grand Prix at the Moscow International festival, the Golden Drums and the Golden Hammer plus other awards from the Clio, Epica, Mobidius… competitions.
McCann-Erickson - Prague was also awarded as the fastest growing agency in the Czech Republic last year and as the most effective agency of the year in 2007. Jan is also a Lecturer in commercial communications at the University of Economics in Prague.
Dudley has a first class degree in History from the University of Southampton. Before joining Transport & Environment (T&E) in 2004, he was a producer for http://www.bbc.co.uk, one of the world's leading content websites.
Since 2004, Dudley is the Communications Manager at T&E, the principal environmental organisation campaigning on sustainable transport at the EU level in Brussels.
Whilst living in Brussels he has contributed to The Bulletin, a weekly magazine for expats and also enjoys photography and playing the saxophone.
Phil is a Group Account Director at Publicis in London, where he runs the Renault UK and United Biscuits accounts.
Before joining Publicis, Phil was Managing Director at Kastner & Partners in London, the agency of record for Red Bull, which gave great insights into how to run an advertising agency, and a real understanding of business itself.
Prior to Kastner & Partners, in 2004, he was at Delaney Lund Knox Warren as Head of Client Services looking after the Account Management Department and running the Halifax account.
Phil came to DLKW from Leo Burnett, which he had joined in July 2001 to run the Heinz and John West accounts. During his first year he worked on a number of successful and award-winning advertising projects, and was promoted to Head of Account Management in August 2002.
Before Leo Burnett, Phil had spent two years in Texas at Temerlin McClain in Dallas, Texas, as a Group Account Director and SVP on the global American Airlines and the oneworld airline alliance accounts.
While an Account Director at M&C Saatchi, where he worked before Leo Burnett, Phil worked on the oneworld alliance, British Airways and Sainsbury’s. Prior to working as an Account Director, Phil had spent time as a Strategic Account Planner on brands including Silk Cut cigarettes and Foster’s beer.
Previously Phil held a position at Keble College, Oxford, for two years as the Lecturer of Zoology, while conducting research on the epidemiology of parasitic infections in the Biology Department of Oxford University. He holds a BSc. and a Ph.D. from Imperial College, London.
Fabio studied classical and modern physics at the University of Padua (Italy) and meteorology at the University of Reading (UK) within the framework of the Erasmus programme. Fabio also learned about oceanography and paleo-climate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA) from which he graduated with a Master of Science on Climate Physics and Chemistry. His contribution fed into the work of the MIT Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change. He is an environmental physicist.
In 2004 Fabio started working at the Environmental Protection Agency of the Veneto Region (Italy) on air quality management, evaluating the impact of the human activities on the north-eastern part of Italy.
Since September 2008, Fabio has been working at the European Commission, DG Environment, mainly on the implementation of the Regulation on CO2 from passenger cars.
Paul joined the Staffordshire University as a Senior Lecturer / Award Manager for BA Hons Design Management in the Faculty of Arts, Media and Design in 1995, after 10 years experience of design management in industry. His specialized areas include new product development, brand management, advertising & promotion and Media liaison.
On taking the award leadership role he has been involved in extensive course development and building links with industries - JCB, Wedgwood, Spode and Design Consultancies in London, Scotland, the North West and New York.
His research projects include establishing a national Design Management Network with national bodies including The Design Council. He has also been influential developing links between the Faculty and two local creative Industry initiatives – Creative Network and Different by Design. Other project include: ‘Key skills into industry’ employability project, co-author for design management for the ‘CERAM’ ‘designers toolkit’ web based resource and refereeing papers for the Design Journal.
More recently he has been part of the founding team for the European Foundation for Commercial Communications Education (EFCCE) pan-European initiative to look at ways to link needs and expectations of industry with academic developments, working together to formulate the future direction of the industry.
Other course developments within the Faculty include co-author of BA Advertising & Brand Management award, which links the disciplines of graphics and design management, and BA Product Innovation – linking product design & design management.
Paul has also completed a post-graduate certificate in education at the University of Derby.
Monica Frassoni was born in Veracruz, Mexico. She graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of Florence.
In 1983, she became actively involved in the European Federalist Movement in Florence and in 1987 she was elected European Secretary General of the European Organisation of Young Federalists (JEF) and she moved to Brussels.
From 1991 to 1993 she carried on following youth policies, as President of the European Co-ordinating Bureau of Youth NGOs. From 1990 until the elections for the European Parliament (EP) in 1999, she worked for The Greens/EFA Group in the European Parliament, as an advisor on institutional issues, internal rules and immunity.
She was elected a member of the European Parliament in Belgium, as part of the Belgian Green Party (ECOLO). In 1999, she was nominated to the steering committee for the constituency phase of the Italian Greens and became a member of the Executive Committee of the Green Party in Italy (Federazione dei Verdi).
In the European elections of June 2004, she was re-elected to the European Parliament with the Italian Greens. Since December 2001, she has been Co-President of The Greens/EFA Group in the EP, together with Daniel Cohn-Bendit.
She is a member of the board of the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank (PNoWB). She was also head of the European Union's electoral observation missions to Bolivia and Venezuela in 2006.
After having graduated from the European School in Brussels, Monique studied Economics at the Katholieke Universiteit in Leuven. She started working in 1981 at the advertising agency J. Walter Thompson and in 1988 at Grey Worldwide.
In 1995, she spent one year in Hong Kong and then worked at McCann-Erickson and Young & Rubican.
Over the last years, she has been giving lectures in marketing communications at the University UCB/VUB and at the EPHEC where she helped set up the Communications option in the 3rd year of the Marketing degree.
In 2001, Monique stopped working full time in an agency and became a Communication Consultant. Since then she has been working on several projects with agencies, advertisers and media.
For the last 20 years, Monique has been an active member of the EFFIE Award Organising Committee and acts as the EFFIE Coordinator since 2 years. She is also a founding partner of a small Human Resources company specialised in MarCom recruitment.
Colin Hensley is General Manager of Corporate Affairs & Planning at Toyota Motor Europe (TME). He is responsible for corporate communications, media relations and external affairs planning for Toyota in Europe.
He has been working at TME for almost 13 years, after 8 years in R&D Management, he moved into Technical PR assuming his current role in 2008.
Prior to that he worked as a Technology Consultant in London and for the European Commission in Brussels, Washington DC and was an ETP participant in Tokyo.

Barbara Hetwig graduated in Social and Economic Communication (Diplom-Kommunikationswirtin) at the University of Arts in Berlin in 1990. From 1990 to 1995, she has been a scientific assistant in the field of social and economic communication in this same university.
In 1990, she started lecturing in the fields of marketing and communications at, amongst others the University of the Arts Berlin, Selcuk University Konya, Muchina Institute St. Petersburg, the design akademie berlin and the Deutsche Angestellten Akademie. She is also a Communication Consultant for the Frankfurt Fair, Web.de, Lufthansa City Center and IKON Sicherheitstechnik GmbH.
In 1999, she was appointed Managing Director of the design akademie berlin, Faculty of Communication Management which became a state approved college in 2007.
Francisco earned his Ph. D and a Master of Arts in Marketing Communications/Advertising at the Emerson College in Boston in 1993.
Francisco is Professor of Advertising and Media Planning at the University of Navarra’s School of Communication in Spain, where he was also assistant dean between 1996 and 2004. He has also served as Academic Director at the Institute of Media and Entertainment (IME) in New York City (2004-2005).
He teaches regularly in graduate programs such as Media Management and Corporate Communication degrees in Navarra and in the program of Journalism for Editors, Centro de Extensâo Universitária in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
He is the author of four books, eleven book chapters and forty-four articles about advertising, corporate communication and media market analysis.
Giovanni started to work in advertising as a copywriter. He currently acts as a creative and strategic advisor for small & medium size ad agencies and writes for Pubblicità Italia.
He lectures Economics of Advertising and Advertising Theory and Techniques at the University of Udine, where he is also Project Director of ADLAB@GO, an Advertising Research and Practice Laboratory.
Carlos graduated in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid and holds a Master in Business Administration from the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid. He also completed a Senior Management Programme at the BBDO University.
He became Contrapunto’s Client Service Director in 1997, its Director General in 1998 and its President in 2003.
Carlos sits on the Executive Council of the Spanish Association of Communications Agencies and is the Director of the Festival “El Sol”.
Andreas graduated in 1987 from the European School of Business (ESB) in Reutlingen, Germany and from the Centre of Superior European Management Studies (CESEM) in Reims, France.
In 1987, he started working as an Account Executive at Grey Düsseldorf and from 1990 to 1996 he worked as an Account Manager at Springer & Jacoby in Hamburg. In 1996, he moved roles and became Strategic Planner at Springer & Jacoby first and then at Scholz & Friends and Jung von Matt.
Since 1999, he is the co-founder, the owner, the Managing Director and the Head of Planning of Heimat in Berlin.
Since 2009, he is a board member of the German Association of Communications Agencies (GWA) and is a founding member of the Account Planning Group in Germany.
Solange is Publications Focal Point and Communications Officer at the United Nations Environment Programme Division of Technology, Industry and Economics (UNEP DTIE), based in Paris.
She has been developing the Advertising and Communication Forum on Sustainability since 1999. This Forum is targeted to companies (notably corporate affairs and marketing directors), advertising agencies, public authorities, communication experts and the media.
Her responsibilities at UNEP have included the promotion of the UNEP Advertising Forum through the preparation and co-ordination of surveys, publications (like “Communicating Sustainability” and “Talk the Walk”), TV spots and workshops. Solange has also coordinated the launch of the UNEP Creative Gallery on Sustainability Communications to highlight thousands of public and private ads related to sustainable development from all sectors and from all continents.
Before joining UNEP, she was project manager at the Club de Bruxelles, a Brussels-based company, which organised international conferences with the European Commission, notably on North-South and environmental issues. In 1994-95, she assisted a British MEP at the European Parliament.
She holds a Master in International Relations.
Tobias is heading BMW Marketing communication in Germany. After heading BMW motorsport and technology communication, he was responsible for the worldwide recruiting of BMW Group. Tobias worked in numerous positions in PR, including strategy and Head of PR BMW and Land Rover Canada. He worked as business consultant. Tobias studied psychology and received his Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology from the University of Regensburg.
Gilles holds a civil engineering degree from the French Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l'Etat. He started his career at the Environment Ministry in Paris before joining the European Commission's Directorate General for Environment in 2003.
In the Clean Air and Transport unit, he prepared the review of the EU CO2 and cars strategy that led to the adoption, at the end of 2007, of a Commission proposal for a regulation to reduce the CO2 emissions from cars.
He was also involved in preparatory work towards a revision of the fuel efficiency labelling directive 1999/94/EC.
Milan is a Senior Lecturer at The University of Economics in Prague where he teaches Marketing and Commercial Communications.
Milan has been teaching for over 20 years at the University of Economics and lectures at various schools and universities in the Czech Republic including at the Charles University in Prague. He also sits on the Board of the Czech Marketing Association.
Sorin started to work in advertising in 1994 at BBDO Romania as a Research Manager and became Integrated Communication Director in January 2008.
He is responsible for supervising the communications strategies for major international and national clients of BBDO Romania such as Wrigley, Pepsi, Dacia-Renault, Bayer, Masterfoods, Scandia (national market leader of canned food) etc.
Since 1996 Sorin is also a full-time lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the University of Bucharest. The main subjects he teaches are consumer behaviour and market research. Last year he coached 4 teams of students for the Ad Venture competition, out of which one team came fourth.
Gerda Reichl-Schebesta is a Creative Director at TBWA Vienna and heads the Creative Unit.
She is works for national and international brands active in Austria and the CEE region. Until 2007, Gerda worked for Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann, the Austrian’s biggest creative agency. Over the last 20 years she has succeeded in creating work which is respected by the international creative community and has been acknowledged through numerous awards from Portoroz to Cannes.
“Entertaining the audience” is her first a mission and she believes that this approach does not only contribute to the development of famous and lovable brands but also solves most of her clients business-related issues.
Moreover, Gerda is very dedicated to generating and advocating junior talent at TBWA\Vienna and also throughout the organisation of workshops for the Austrian Ad Academy. As a board-member of the Creative Club of Austria (CCA) she is very eager to unveil the value of creativity for brands to their “owner”: the advertisers.
Guido studied philosophy at the University of Florence. In 1975, he became member of the Provincial Secretariat and then General Secretary of the Federation of workers in Metallurgical Industries and the General Confederation of workers (FIOM CGIL).
In 1990, he became General Secretary of the Chamber of Labour of Florence. He has also been Member (1995) and then the Vice-Chairman (1998) of the Regional Council of Tuscany.
He is Member of the European Parliament since 1999. He was a member of the delegation from the European Parliament to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg, 2002) and to the 9th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework.
He is currently a member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament.
Grażyna holds a postgraduate degree in applied social psychology from the Warsaw Academy of Applied Psychology.
She has worked both on “the client side” and on the “agency side”.
She has worked at the PepsiCo Poland/ Tricon in the operational and marketing department where she was responsible for Pizza Hut & KFC.. She then became KFC and Pizza Hut Brand Manager and PR Manager for PepsiCo Restaurants. She has also worked as Senior Brand Manager for Kama Foods: Znakomita.
On the agency side, she has been Strategic Manager and then Strategic Director at BBDO Warsaw’s Strategy Department, providing service to brands from a range of market sectors including: mBank, Multibank, GE Money Bank, Polish Telecom, Bayer, P&G, Mars Polska, PepsiCo, Wrigley.
She won various Effie Prizes: in 2001 for a campaign developed for mBank, in 2003 with ICI Dulux, in 2005 with GE Money Bank, in 2007 with Bayer and in 2008 with the SOS Children Villages charity.
She is also a Lecturer at the Polish Advertising Association’s School of Brand Strategy and at the Academy of Marketing Communication.
She is member of the EFFIE Committee and the PAA’a Strategy Club.
Anneke van der Voort-Kruk is a marketing communication and public relations specialist with over a decade of international experience in the industry, gained through strategic and operational roles. She worked both as Regional manager and in consultancy positions.
She completed a Master’s Degree in Marketing Communication in 2004.
Since 2005 she has been working as a Lecturer in Marketing at NHTV Breda University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. She lectures marketing, marketing communication and sales management and is involved in several international projects.
Adriaan was born in 1966. He studied marketing and has served as Client Service Manager and Account Director in several media agencies: Carat Netherlands, Asatsu, Initiative Media Amstelveen, Initiative Media Boekarest, Capacity and Initiative Media Wenen.
He is currently Media Director at ZenithOptimedia and has an impressive portfolio of clients including Hewlett Packard, British Airways, HTC, Dexto Energy, Hyundai and Disneyland Resort Paris.
MEMBERS OF THE JURY, ROUND TWO
John Delacruz graduated in Fine Art. He has experience as an Illustrator, a Printmaker and as a teacher of Art and Design at secondary school-level and of Design History at university-level. He established the Award for Advertising and Brand Management.
Award Leader: BA (Hons) Advertising and Brand Management at Staffordshire University, Faculty of Arts, Media & Design.
Since 2005, Peter is Chairman of the Professional Association for Advertising and Market Communication.
Peter studied communication science and sociology at the University of Vienna and his Doctoral thesis focused on Public Relations of non-governmental organisations. He started his career as a journalist in the late 80s.
He is a board member and the spokesperson of Austria’s biggest environmental NGO “Grüne Wirtschaft”.
He has also been an independent public relations consultant since 1995. He is involved in both national and international activities and his clients come from the IT, tourism and culture sectors but also include governmental institutions.
Małgorzata holds a masters degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Economics in Poznan in Poland and a postgraduate degree in European Economics from the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium). After graduating from university, she worked in an international corporation in the marketing department where she was involved in several brand promotion campaigns, e.g. launch of a new brand, repositioning of an international brand…
In 2007, Małgorzata joined the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to work as a policy officer on transport and climate change policy. In her position she focused on aspects of climate protection in the UK road and rail transport policies.
Since May 2008 she has been working in DG Environment in the Clean Air and Transport unit. Her main tasks include revision of the fuel efficiency and CO2/cars labelling directive and implementation of the regulation to reduce CO2 emissions from light-duty vehicles.
Jean-Claude Hamilius graduated from the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach in Germany. Over the years, he has been Artistic and Creative Director at Young&Rubicam, Leo Burnett, Saatchi, DMB&B and McCann Erickson in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, in charge of the creation and/or creativity locally and at European level.
He is the founder and Creative Director of Consumers (Ges.f.gute Werbung mbH) in Düsseldorf and in October 2007 he was named Professor of “Kommunikationsdesign” at the faculty “für Gestaltung” of the Hochschule Mannheim.
Frances Illingworth is the Global Recruitment Director for WPP. She is responsible for executive recruiting for WPP’s operating companies globally.
Frances is responsible for talent management, retentions strategies and graduate recruitment which include the gold standard WPP Fellows Programme.
Frances began her career in marketing at Spillers Foods after reading History at Manchester University. After four years on the client side, Frances moved to the agency world joining Bates, Lintas and Leo Burnett. She was responsible for managing major multinational clients, including Procter and Gamble, Nestle and Unilever.
In 1997 Frances joined an executive search company, recruiting senior level leadership in media and communications. Frances joined WPP in 1999 as their Recruitment Director and since then has built the international Talent Team who works with WPP companies to identify, recruit and develop senior leaders.
Frances holds a Masters in Human Resource Management and resides in London with her husband Paul.
David was born in 1972 in France. He has lived in Norway, the States, Argentina, the United Arab Emirates and Sweden and has both advertiser and agency experience.
He has worked for Christian Dior, as Product Manager at Citroën in Sweden (1995-1997), and as Account Supervisor at Ammirati Puris in Paris (1998-2000).
He joined Renault in 2000 and is currently Head of Global Marketing Communication Strategy & Production Department.
Diane’s international advertising career spans 25 years with roles from Senior Executive within a media organisation to Media Director for an advertising agency in the world’s most vibrant cities - London, Tokyo and Singapore working with some of the most recognised agencies and clients; among them McCann Erickson, Lintas, BBDO and Batey Ads with Singapore Airlines.
On immigrating to Western Australia she was appointed General Manager at ACP Publishing before joining Edith Cowan University as Lecturer and Advertising Course Coordinator in addition to her role as Director, International & Industry Partnerships in the School of Communications and Arts.
Diane teaches internationally and sits on the Executive Committee of the International Advertising Association (IAA) with a global portfolio as Vice President Education.
After working as a scriptwriter for BRT (Belgium television) and illustrator for Flair magazine, Guillaume began his copywriting career at McCann-Erickson in 1981. In 1985 he moved to TBWA and soon after joined Young & Rubicam in 1986 where in the early nineties he was part of a select group of global creative directors.
In 1996, together with André Duval, Guillaume co-founded Belgium’s top creative agency Duval Guillaume, with offices in Brussels and Antwerp. They are currently starting up Duval Guillaume in New York where Guillaume is Creative Director. Their clients include InBev, Virgin Airlines, Sara Lee, Carlsberg, Spa mineral water, Dexia Bank, Hyundai, Spar, Ricard, Radio 1 and Belgacom amongst others.
In 1997, Guillaume wrote and illustrated ‘The Simple Truth About Advertising’. "This amusing little book will not teach you how to become a great advertiser - but at least should help you understand why you're not", quoted Sir Richard Branson. The same year, Guillaume was chosen to sit on the Cannes Lions Film jury.
Guillaume has won many international awards, including 11 Cannes Lions, and Duval Guillaume was the most awarded agency of the year at the 2003 Eurobest awards.
During 2006 and 2007, he has been Speaker at “I love magazines” Sanoma in Budapest, Jury Chairman of the Third annual Advertising Festival of Poland, Participant at Shots Forum in London, speaker at Radio Days in Köln, jury D&AD global awards in London, speaker at Club Criativos in Portugal, judge at the Marketing Awards in Toronto and judge at Effie Awards in Brussels.
In 2009, he wrote a book under the title: Hero brands.
