The EFCCE Student Competition Jury consists of senior advertising professionals, academics & professors representing a variety of communication and marketing disciplines from each country. The 2007-2008 Jury also included EU officials.

Xavier Oliver, President of the EFCCE, will chair the 2007-2008 Student Competition.

Xavier OlivierDr. Xavier Oliver is the first president of the European Foundation for Commercial Communications Education. Dr. Oliver has been president of BBDO in Spain, which gathers under its umbrella 11 corporate communication companies.

Dr. Xavier Oliver teaches at IESE Business School and is an associate professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Navarra. He was also dean of BBDO University, a communication and management teaching centre. Dr. Oliver completed IESE's Program for Management Development in 1979 and the Strategic Marketing Management Program at Harvard University in 1985. He earned his PHD in Advertising from the University of Navarra.

His career started off at the United Nations in 1974, when he conducted a study on emergency situations in the Middle East. He also worked for the World Council of Churches (Jerusalem, 1974) and the World Health Organization (Copenhagen, 1975).

Previously, he has held the positions of President of the European Advertising Agencies Association EAAA (1999-2000) and the Asociación Española de Agencias de Publicidad (AEAP) (1990-1994). He has been a member of the jury at numerous prestigious advertising and film festivals such as SAWA (Cannes, 1984), FIAP (Brazil, 1985) and the New York Festivals (1988). He was a founding member, advisor and jury member of the Asociación de Autocontrol de la Publicidad. Between 1986 and 1996 he was director of the El Sol San Sebastian Advertising Festival.

Dr. Oliver has written and contributed to books published by the United Nations and IESE Business School, such as Advertising Communication (1997) and Ethics in Marketing and Publicity (1998). At IESE, he has developed various cases in the areas of marketing and strategic branding. He is a member of the Spanish Círculo de Economía.

José M. Amiguet Esteban, Lecturer and Creative Director, Spain

Martin CharvátJosé M. Amiguet Esteban holds a Bachelor Degree in Social Sciences from the CEU San Pablo University in Valencia. He is Professor of Advertising and Public Relations at the Social Sciences and Law Faculty of CEU Cardenal Herrera University where he also holds the position of Faculty Secretary. He also cooperates on a regular basis with marketers as a Creative Director.

Martin Charvát, Creative director Mark BBDO, Czech Republic

Martin CharvátBorn in 1962, Martin Charvát was originally a fireman under the Communist regime but entered the world of private enterprise after the Velvet Revolution in 1989.
In 1994 he started work in advertising - as a junior copywriter at Leo Burnett. In 2000 he was appointed as the agency's Creative Director. Since 2003 he has been Creative Director of Mark BBDO. Under his leadership, Mark BBDO has won awards at Cannes, was designated as the second best agency in Central and Eastern Europe and was shortlisted as one of the world's Top 100 creative agencies in the Gunn Report. The ads he has worked on have been recognised by the Clio, The One Show, Epica, Portoroz Golden Drum and by many more other festivals. His work has been published at D&AD Annual, Communication Arts, Lüerzers‘ Archive and others. It has also been exhibited in the Czech National Gallery. He runs seminars about creativity in advertising at the Prague Unniversity of Economics and at the Czech Institute of Advertising and Marketing Communication.
As a jury member, he took part in judging both national and international award shows for ADC Europe, Cresta, Golden Drum Portoroz, New York Festivals, Moscow International Advertising Festival and many more.

Sofia Cohen, Strategic Planner, McCann Erickson Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia CohenSofia Cohen graduated with a B.A. in Informal Education from the Bar Ilan University in Israel and with a M.B.A. from the University of Sofia “St. Kliment Ohridski”. She is a polyglot and besides Bulgarian speaks English, Spanish, Hebrew and Russian fluently. Sofia has a background based in aviation and real estate marketing. She joined McCann Erickson four years ago as a Strategic Planner and has worked for clients such as Nestle, General Motors, L’Oreal Paris, MasterCard, National Geographic Magazine and others. Sofia has won many awards at the FARA creative festival and a Golden EFFIE for McCann’s latest 3in1 Nescafe campaign. She was also a member of the jury at the Bulgarian EFFIE Festival in 2007.

John Delacruz, Senior Lecturer, Staffordshire University, UK

John DelacruzJohn Delacruz graduated in Fine Art. He has experience as an Illustrator, a Printmaker and as a teacher of Art and Design at secondary school-level and of Design History at university-level. He established the Award for Advertising and Brand Management.

Micky Denehy, Marketing Director EMEA, Saatchi & Saatchi, UK

Micky DenehyMicky Denehy graduated from Bristol University with a degree in Human Geography.
He began as a graduate trainee in London at Ogilvy and Mather before moving on to spend 8 years at GGT, progressing to become Client Service Director. During his time there he was responsible for many of GGT’s blue chip clients including Cadbury, KP, Mazda and Taunton Cider as well as being a Campaign “Face to Watch”.

He later became afterwards CEO of Guzel Santlar Bates, the biggest agency in Turkey. During his 5 years at the helm he was to open the first international agency in Tashkent, Uzbekistan as well as drive international revenue into the Istanbul office. He moved back to London in 1999 to take on the role as Bates European New Business Director for 2 years culminating with the global win of Wella haircare.

Bates then offered Micky the chance to move to Dubai as the CEO of Bates Middle East and South Asia as well as running the dynamic local agency. In 2002 Micky returned to the UK and joined Saatchi & Saatchi, London (the new Cannes Agency of the Year) as their new UK Marketing Director. In 2004 he was appointed Marketing Director Saatchi & Saatchi Europe, Middle East and Africa and in 2006 Micky took on the additional responsibility of managing the network’s relationships with its 20 Associate agencies across EMEA.

Sandra Femenía Almerich, Lecturer, Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU, Spain

Selina FirthSandra Femenía Almerich holds a Bachelor Degree in Advertising and Public Relations from the CEU Cardenal Herrera University. She trained in advertising and public relations in Valencian agencies and has been co-manager on various projects dealing with culture and sporting events.

She is Lecturer for the Advertising and Public Relations degree in the Social Sciences and Law Faculty of CEU Cardenal Herrera University, Manager of the Erasmus programme for Advertising and Public Relations Degree and Coordinator of external relationships and training for the Advertising and Public Relations degree at CEU Cardenal Herrera University.

Selina Firth, Senior Comms Planning Director, Carat, UK

Selina FirthSelina Firth is Comms Planning Director working across all of J&J’s brands at Carat Global Management. She has worked at both media and creative agencies across a variety of different accounts including Virgin Media, BBC , Colgate Palmolive, Diageo and Chanel.

 

 

 

Monique Gerritsen, Senior Lecturer, Haute Ecole EPHEC, Belgium

Monique GerritsenMonique Gerritsen holds a Masters in Economic Sciences from the Catholic University of Louvain (KUL). She started her career in 1981 at the J. Walter Thompson communications agency.
For 20 years she worked as Client Services Director and as a member of the Management team in several international communications agencies (JWT, Grey Worldwide, McCann Erickson and Young & Rubicam) and managed clients in different sectors on a national and an international level.

Guest lecturer at the EPHEC since 1999, she started to teach in 2002 and helped to found the communication option in the Haute Ecole EPHEC’s Marketing section.

Ms. Gerritsen also works as HR consultant at HC Consulting (direct search & recruitment office), is a freelance communication consultant and has been a member of the EFFIE Awards’ Organisation Committee for 17 years.

Barbara Hertwig, Managing Director, design akademie berlin, Germany

Barbara HertwigBarbara Hetwig graduated in Social and Economic Communication (Diplom-Kommunikationswirtin) at the University of Arts in Berlin in 1990. From 1990 to 1995, she was a scientific assistant in the field of social and economic communication in this same university.

In 1990, she started lecturing in the fields of marketing and communications at amongst others the University of the Arts Berlin, Selcuk University Konya, Muchina Institute St. Petersburg and the design akademie berlin, Deutsche Angestellten Akademie, She is also a Communication Consultant for the Frankfurt Fair, Web.de, Lufthansa City Center and IKON Sicherheitstechnik GmbH.

In 1999, she was appointed as Managing Director of the design akademie berlin, Faculty of Communication Management which became a state approved college in 2007.

John Huston, Consultant, Sango, France

Barbara Hertwig18 years of international experience in Management, Recruitment, Retail Distribution & Human Resources have given John Hutson the credibility to help people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses and organisations.

Bi-cultural, having lived in France for 20 years, he also has a dual background- operational and administrative- giving him the insight and vision to find solutions out of the box. Having been part of the opening team at Disneyland Paris Resort, (member of the team that recruited 15 000 people in 12 months) and managed the European recruitment team (2000 hires per year), John understands the idea of working with people from different cultures to meet and surpass difficult goals. He attained additional operational experience and business acumen by managing a team of more than 115 people at The Disney Store-Champs Elysées, the most profitable store of The Disney Store chain worldwide. As HR Manager for the advertising agency Lowe Paris, he provided valuable advice during a critical downsizing period helping the agency to attain its economic goals without compromising on hiring, integrating, training and retaining new talent. Having co-founded the consulting firm MacMillan hcd, human capital development, John now shares his experience with companies around Europe, Asia and North America. John also works with several renowned business and communication schools in France; Sup de Pub, ISCOM, ESP, Science Com, HEC, ESSEC.

Sven John, Lecturer, Berlin University of the Arts, Germany

Sven JohnSven John has been in the advertising industry since 1988. He also teaches marketing and acts as a business angel.

After his graduation in Communications Sciences at HdK Berlin and work as an account trainee in a strategic planning department, Sven was offered his first job at Grey Düsseldorf where he was in charge of client expertise and worked for Beecham, Procter & Gamble, Skoda, Bank 24, Muelhens, Krups, Visa, Hyundai and Milupa.

In 1996, he joined BBDO Group Germany as Managing Partner before first becoming Managing Director at BBDO Advertising in Düsseldorf and then in Berlin where he initiated the ‘House of Communication’. During his time at BBDO, Sven worked for a wide range of clients such as BMW, Worldwide Sales Literature, Dunlop, Deutsche Bank 24 and Deutsche Bank, Nissan, Margret Astor and Kaldewei.

In 2004, Sven left BBDO to set up Interone Beijing, a fully integrated agency with services ranging from advertising to dealer marketing, customer relationship management and online services, where he worked mainly for BMW China Mainland, Hongkong and Taiwan. Since 2005, Sven has been working freelance for Interone Worldwide and has recently launched the BMW E60 CHL in China.

Sven teaches at Berlin’s University of the Arts (UdK) and Berlin’s design akademie.

Mike Longhurst, Senior Vice President, Mc Cann-Erickson EMEA, UK

Mike LonghurstMike Longhurst is a member of the McCann Europe management team and has served the agency in many senior roles, both domestic and international. As a Worldwide Account Director based in Germany he was responsible for coordination of German-based international business (Bayer, Agfa, AmEx). This was followed by a spell in the mid 1990’s based in Nairobi as CEO of theirEast African agencies.

Mike’s UK based experience covers a wide variety of categories including cars with GM, food with CPW, financial with Anglia Building Society, airlines with Lufthansa and others, Esso, Goodyear, P&O Ferries. In recent years he has played a leading role in the development of accounts like Deutsche Bank, MasterCard and Vodafone.

He plays a prominent part in Industry affairs as a member of the Executive Board of the European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA) and recently spoke on advertising at the European Parliament.

Stéphane Martin, Delegate Director, National TV Advertising Syndicate (SNPTV), France

Jiri MikesStéphane Martin is the Delegate Director of the French National TV Advertising Syndicate. From 1990 to 1998, he was Marketing Manager for Avenir which now belongs to the JCDecaux Group.

Since 1998, in collaboration with members of the French TV advertising sales houses, TF1 Publicité, M6 Publicité, Canal + Régie, Lagardere Publicité, MTV Publicité, TMC Régie, he creates, sets up and follows up the role and missions of the first permanent delegation of the French TV Advertising National Trade Association.Furthermore, he studies, promotes and defends TV advertising against opinion leaders (press, representatives of the advertising market and governmental and political institutions).

Stéphane is also Administrator of the Self-Regulation Organisation (BVP.org), the French Chapter of the International Advertising Association and EDIPublicite.com and Treasurer of AFDAS.com (Fund of professional training) and the French Advertising Federation.

Jiri Mikes, Senior Lecturer, University of Economics, Czech Republic

Jiri MikesJiri Mikes works at McCann-Erickson in Prague and is a senior lecturer at the University of Economics in the same city. He was the first president of the Czech Advertising Standard Authority and has also been the director of the Association of Communications Agencies in Czechia and a member of EACA’s Board. He is co-author of the “Advertising” publication and was named the first ‘Adman’ in the Czech Republic.

 

 

Gérard Onesta, MEP & Vice-President of the European Parliament

Gérard OnestaGérard Onesta started his career as an architect and was at the head of an architectural agency based in Albi from 1985 to 1999.

He co-founded the Federation of Young European Greens in 1988 and was a member of the Greens’ National Council from 1987 to 1999. From 1994 to 1995 he was also in charge of institutional affairs for the Greens’ National Spokesman.
He was elected as a Member of the European Parliament in 1991 for the South West of France and as the Vice-President of the European Parliament and of the Parliament’s Bureau in 1999.

He is currently a member of the Committee on Budgets and of the Delegation for relations with the Mercosur.

Francisco Perez Latre, Professor of Advertising and Media, University of Navarra, Spain

Francisco Perez LatreFrancisco Perez Latre is Professor of Advertising and Media Planning in the School of Communication at the University of Navarra, Spain, where he was also assistant dean between 1996 and 2004. He has also served as Academic Director at the Institute of Media and Entertainment (IME) in New York City (2004-2005).  He teaches regularly in graduate programs such as Media Management and  Corporate Communication degrees in Navarra and in the program of Journalism for Editors, Centro de Extensâo Universitária  in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

He earned his Ph. D and a Master of Arts in Marketing Communications/Advertising at Emerson College, Boston in 1993. He is the author of four books, eleven book chapters and forty-four articles about advertising, corporate communication and media market analysis.

Isabel de Salas, Dean, Universidad Cardenal Herrera CEU, Spain

Christian SchmidIsabel de Salas holds a Bachelor Degree in Philosophy and Arts and a Bachelor of Psychology from the Complutense University of Madrid. She is Professor of Information Sciences and the Dean of the Social Sciences and Law Faculty of CEU Cardenal Herrera University. She worked in advertising agencies as a Strategic Director before joining the world of academia.

Christian Schmid, Managing Director, TBWA Vienna, Austria

Christian SchmidChristian Schmid started work in advertising at EURO RSCG Sales Machine in 1990. In 1995, he moved to Demner, Merlicek & Bergmann Advertising Ltd and in 2000, he was appointed as a member of the Management Board. Since 2004, he has been the Managing Director of TBWA Vienna.

 


Martina Sever, Marketing Director, Senca.net, Slovenia

Martina SeverMartina Sever graduated with a B.A in Economics from the University of Ljubjana in 1993 and with a M.B.A from the Oklahoma State University in the United States in 1996.

She held executive marketing positions for more than a decade on the advertisers’ side. At first, as Head of the Marketing Department of Telekom Slovenije, later as Marketing Director of Slovenia Online, Telekom's daughter company. Following the merger of Slovenia Online she went back to Telekom Slovenije in 2007. She was responsible for strategic planning of its newly established Multimedia Services and Content Department. Martina's interest in telecommunications has been effectively interlaced with her professional marketing skills. She was responsible for facilitating new brand development and management that resulted in strong brand recognition.

Currently, she is employed as Marketing Director on the agency side. Senca.net is a company which creates efficient solutions in the field of digital internet communication and communication in the broader sense of the word. These solutions are mostly based on a high level of knowledge of the internet media market both in Slovenia and abroad. Martina's work has been awarded with EFFIE awards in 2002 and 2006. She has been an active member of the Slovenian EFFIE Committee since 2005 and is currently president of EFFIE 2008 Slovenia.

Martin Stepanek, President AKA and CEO of Publicis, Czech Republic

Martin StepanekMartin Štěpánek graduated from the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts. He established a local advertising agency AB Line in 1991. Since 1995, he has been Managing Director and part-owner of Publicis Prague as well as a part-owner of Saatchi&Saatchi Prague and ZenithOptimedia Prague. Since 2006, he has been the President of the Association Communication Agencies (AKA) in Czech Republic.


 

Henning von Vieregge, Director General, German Association of Communications Agencies (GWA), Germany

Martin Stepanek Born in 1946, Henning von Vieregge graduated with a Magister Artium (M.A.) and a Doctor’s Degree in Political Sciences, Sociology and Constitutional Law. He held various positions as a journalist, an academic and researcher and in the advertising world before joining the Employer’s Association of the Metal Industry Hessen first as the organisation’s spokesman and then as its Managing Director. In March 1995, Henning was appointed as GWA’s Director General, the German Advertising Agency Association based in Frankfurt and since April 1998 Henning is also a Member of the Board of EACA.

MEMBERS OF THE JURY ROUND TWO

Hervé Brossard, Vice-Chairman DDB Worlwide & AACC President, France

Hervé BrossardHervé Brossard graduated in Law and from the IRPCS (French Institute of PR Executive Managers). He started his professional career in advertising at DDB 20 years ago going on to work on various accounts such as Jacques Vabre and Danone. In 1985, he was appointed General Director of DDB Advertising and in 1986 following the merger of DDB and Needham networks, he was nominated General Director of DDB Needham Advertising and then Chief Executive Officer in 1988. In 1989, he became CEO of DDB Communication France before becoming President of Southern Europe, President of Continental Europe and finally Vice-Chairman of DDB Worldwide in 2002. Under his leadership, DDB has increased its employees from 150 in 1985 to over 1.700 today.

He is currently President of the DDB International Agency and since 2004 of the French Association of Communications Agencies (AACC).

Niklas Frings Rupp, Managing Director, Miami Ad School Europe

Martin Stepanek Niklas Frings-Rupp started his career as an account manager working for agencies such as DDB London, TBWA Germany, Springer & Jacoby and Jung von Matt. Over the years he worked for a large number of clients including BMW, Mini, Apple, Media Markt, GlaxoWelcome, Weihenstephan, Der Spiegel, Unicef and many more.

In 2003 he founded the Miami Ad School Europe together with Oliver Voss, one of Germany's leading creatives. The school was first established in a former hospital in Hamburg with only 12 students. Ever since then, the school has grown rapidly and now gathers together over 70 students from 30 countries. Recently Niklas and Oliver expanded the school and created sub-branches in Stockholm, Vienna, Amsterdam and Brussels and are planning to create a further school in Shanghai.

After only its second year in existence, the school was already the most awarded school in the world, collecting top prizes at all major student award shows. Titles won by the students so far include German “Student of the year” (twice in a row), Dutch “Student of the year”, the first ever Lüerzers Archive “International Student of the Year” and last year’s “Student Young Gun of the Year”. The school is the only advertising school outside the US which is always mentioned in the Gunn report among the best advertising schools worldwide. Work done by their student interns interning has resulted in 5 Lions at Cannes, 5 Pencils at the One Show, Andy & Clio nominations, 2 Pencils at the D&AD Awards and a couple more at the German ADC.

In his spare time, Niklas likes to race his old and somewhat dusty Porsche on the German Autobahn and professional race tracks.

Jean-Claude Hamilius, Senior Lecturer, Hochschule Mannheim, Germany

Jean-Claude HamiliusJean-Claude Hamilius graduated from the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach in Germany. Over the years, he has been Artistic and Creative Director at Young&Rubicam, Leo Burnett, Saatchi, DMB&B and McCann Erickson in Frankfurt and Düsseldorf, in charge of the creation and/or creativity locally and at European level.

He is the founder and Creative Director of Consumers (Ges.f.gute Werbung mbH) in Düsseldorf and in October 2007 he was named Professor of “Kommunikationsdesign” at the faculty “für Gestaltung” of the Hochschule Mannheim.

 

Frances Illingworth, Global Recruitment Director, WPP Group, UK

Jean-Claude HamiliusFrances Illingworth is the Global Recruitment Director for WPP. WPP is the second largest marketing and communications company in the world with approximately 97,000 employees in 64 operating companies in more than 100 countries. She is responsible for executive recruiting for WPP’s operating companies globally. Additionally, Frances is responsible for talent management, retentions strategies and graduate recruitment which includes the gold standard WPP Fellows Programme.

Frances began her career in marketing at Spillers Foods after reading History at Manchester University. After four years on the client side, Frances moved to the agency world joining Bates, Lintas and Leo Burnett. She was responsible for managing major multinational clients, including Procter and Gamble, Nestle and Unilever.

In 1997 Frances joined an executive search company, recruiting senior level leadership in media and communications. Frances joined WPP in 1999 as their Recruitment Director and since then has built the international Talent Team who works with WPP companies to identify, recruit and develop senior leaders.

Frances holds a Masters in Human Resource Management and resides in London with her husband Paul.

Marc Taquet-Graziani, Communication Manager, European Commission, DG Communication, Unit A2: Communication Projects and Strategies

Helga Van den BulckMarc Taquet-Graziani holds a "Maîtrise" of History of International Relations from the University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne), the Diploma of the Paris Institute of Political Sciences and a Masters in European Politics and Administration from the College of Europe in Bruges. Marc started a career in European Union Public Affairs in 1996 at Charles Barker Ltd. advising clients in the food and drinks sector and on EU institutional reform. In 1998, further to the acquisition of Charles Barker Ltd. by the BSMG group, Marc created a new business unit dealing with Transport and Defense issues in Adamson BSMG. In 2003, further to the merger between BSMG and Weber Shandwick, Marc became Managing Director EU Public Affairs for Weber Shandwick Worldwide Brussels. From 1998 to 2004 Marc was also Chairman of the Institutional Affairs Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Brussels.

In 2005 Marc joined the European Commission starting in the Directorate General for Research and Technological Development and in May 2007 he joined the Directorate General for Communication as a Communication Manager. Marc currently coordinates the activities of the Commission on two of its communication priorities, namely Intercultural dialogue and Migration.

Helga Van den Bulck, Lecturer, Plantijnhogeschool Antwerpen, Belgium

Helga Van den BulckHelga Van den Bulck graduated from the Free University of Brussels with a master degree in communication sciences. Her university education included an internship at the research department of the Flemish public broadcasting company and open programme courses in international political sciences at the University of Cambridge and at the Université de Caen (France).

For two years she worked in the printed media sector as an advertising consultant. From that time on she started teaching advertising courses at graduate and postgraduate level in various institutions.
 
Currently she teaches advertising, international corporate and intercultural communication at the Plantijn university of applied sciences in Antwerp for Belgian and international students.

To keep up with the continuous changes in the communication landscape she has taken part in various programmes in Amsterdam and worked briefly in New York.
She is extensively involved in many national and international projects with advertising agencies, which are all focused on strategy development and campaign planning.

Roderick White, Admap Editor, UK

Roderick WhiteRoderick White spent nearly 40 years as an account planner within what is now WPP, initially with JWT and subsequently with Conquest, working on a wide range of blue-chip advertising accounts both nationally and internationally. He spent part of this career as a marketing consultant, and headed JWT's Consultancy Unit in the 1970s. Since 1996, he has been the editor of Admap, an internationally well-regarded practitioner journal covering the fields of marketing communications, media and related research. He has lectured at a wide range of business schools, and written two successful business books. He has been a judge at both the IPA Effectiveness Awards and the Euro-Effies.
